Sani Pass, Himeville, Kzn
Trails: 6/10 Facilities: 5/10
Sani Pass is undoubtedly the best known pass in South Africa, when it comes to off-roading.
In the past, it was a real 4x4 challenge, but over the years it has been "dumbed down" quite a bit. The attraction now is when it snows, because it can become a winter wonderland with stunning scenary. We had been waiting and watching thr weather for several weeks, just waiting for a good snowfall to make the trek up the pass, and then ride down on our bikes.
“From a trail point of view, its not the biggest challenge, but where else do you get to ride downhill for SO long"
4x4 Up, Bicycle Down
We decided to shuttle to the top of the pass. Some people enjoy the challenge of riding up, but we are not precious about climbing too much!! Maccie our land cruiser was only too happy to oblige and shuttle us up to the top.
After arriving at the highest pub in Africa, Sani Top Chalets, we enjoyed a quick meal, before brewing up some coffee, offloading the bike, and starting back down the pass.
Whilst its not very technical, the loose gravel and high speeds can catch you out. The corners can be slippery and you also need to be on the look out for other vehicles coming up. The pass can be quite busy on weekends.
I cant think of too many other places as iconic as Sani Pass. If you can, let us know and we will go ride them too.
The views are amazing, the pub at the top is a "must do" and the ride back down is truly exhilarating.
Scenery for days
Sani Top Pub
If you decide to ride up, be prepared, its a monster.
Its not great if you are looking for a very technical challenge.
