Sani Spoors, Underberg, Kzn

Sani Spoors, as the name suggests, is in the Southern Drakensburg town of Underberg, near Sani Pass.
A few enthusiastic farmers got together a few years ago to start building trails for themsleves to ride, and this has now become a larger trail network, with 60 km of trail along the Mzimkulu river and into the surrounding hills on pristine dairy farms, pine and wattle plantations and beef country.
“Its really just about riding bikes you know, and it kinda grew from there.”- Ed Smith, Sani Spoors
Day out on the bike
We decided to do thing a little different on this trip and go out for a full day on the bikes, film gear, food and coffee loaded in our backpacks.
We weren't disappointed. Despite mist and drizzle when we set off, the day turned out sunny and warm and we were treated to amazing views of the surrounding hills and the imposing Drakensberg in the background. Coffee and sandwiches high on a mountain ridge were a real highlight of the ride.
Riding here is kind of two-faced, and thats a good thing.
Along the river you will find gentle meandering trails suitable for everyone (we took our 5 and 7 year old on these trails).
As you move away from the river and into the surrounding hills, things get progressively harder and the riding becomes more technical and challenging as you get further and higher, which we think is a really good thing.
We really loved riding at Sani Spoors. The area, attractions and facilities make this a premiere family riding getaway.
Variety of riding for skill levels
Lots of great accommodation
Can be very muddy in summer, but dries out fast
