Surely one of the most out there , magical and mystical places we have ever ridden our bikes
“It just rises out of the desert, and Inselberg rising from the flat desert. As you get closer, you realise how big it really is and when you are next to it, it towers above you. its pretty impressive”- Patrick de Goede, Cycletec Windhhoek
They start out like a teenager’s pimple on the flat landscape of the world’s oldest desert, but as you get closer, you realise that these are an imposing act of nature!
As you get ever closer, the granite inselbergs that are the Spitzkoppe loom up in front of you and fill the windscreen. Its around about then that you start to see what looks like smooth granite slick rock. With the appearance of petrified waves and rollers, you start to pick out lines and routes you might try. Excited much??
Up close though, the surface is more like rough tar, but the traction is immense and you have to adjust what you consider realistic, both up and down hill. Its amazing how much grip there is, but falling on this stuff would be falling on a giant cheese grater!!!
Mystical, spiritual and beautiful all at once, camping under the stars with these huge sentries looking over you is an experience you will never forget.
Huge thanks to Patrick from Cycletec Windhoek for showing us around and hosting us like a champion.
